A. He is a composer.
My interest in composing and arranging began during my stay in the U.K. in the 70s, where I helped form one of the many professional big bands playing the Manchester circuit. After taking lessons from a man who looked and dressed like brickie’s labourer but whose musical brain was second-to-none, our merry band toured extensively, and at one point featured 18 musicians, two singers and a kitchen sink.
Back in Oz I was one of the first students in the Jazz Studies course at the prestigious Sydney Conservatorium of Music, studying with the likes of Mark Isaacs, under the tutelage of jazz alumni Howie Smith, William Motzing and George Golla. I majored in Big Band Arranging/ Composing and wrote many original compositions & arrangements for the excellent Con big band, which were performed at venues such as the Basement. We’re talking straight up Basie-blues, Gil Evans moody musings and roaring hard swing.
I’ve produced both entire scores and musical moments for short films and clips (see demos).
I play the acoustic guitar, mainly jazz solos, and whilst jazz is still close to my heart I am able to produce many types of musical styles to suit your needs. I have also written many vocal arrangements for female, male and SATB quartets and choirs.
